Kansas City Partnership Starts with an “Overflowing” Church

Kansas City Partnership Begins with Overflow Church

Beautiful weather turned out for FBCO’s first visit to Kansas City to support its new partner, Overflow Church, in suburban Martin City. The church’s name comes from the its mission in “Saturating Our Community with the Overflowing Love of Jesus.”

Overflow lies near the Kansas-Missouri state line. That location straddles an affluent Kansas population and a more economically challenged Missouri area. In June, the church moved a bit east into Grandview—the childhood hometown of President Harry Truman.

The move also signaled a new partnership for Overflow: It shares space with the existing Central Free Will Baptist Church. Both churches have active memberships of around 30, and both hope to win the city to Christ and grow at the same time.

FBCO mission team members in May canvassed Grandview neighborhoods near Central Baptist to introduce area residents to Overflow. Around 180 homes were touched with a number of conversations about the church. There were also witnessing opportunities, such as to Clarence—an older man who was raised in a Christian environment and had heard of Christ, but who converted to Islam while in prison. A door-step conversation planted a seed for Christ to him.

Friday evening during the weekend trip FBCO also helped Overflow stage a block party in a local park. More conversations about the church and Christ occurred there. Daniel was a man who was at the park for nearly three hours. He said he needed to come back to Christ. Other similar conversations were made with residents as they enjoyed hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks, and chips provided by FBCO and Overflow.

Saturday, our team members supported Overflow as its members served the community during a local festival. Our water dunking station proved to be popular with kids. FBCO members also circulated during the festival to talk up Overflow, and enjoyed meeting again some of the residents they saw at the park the night before.

Pray for Overflow that souls will be brought to Christ as the church follows up on contacts made, and that new contacts will be made as it ministers in its new community. Pray also for cooperation and unity among the two congregations sharing a building so that Christ will shine in Grandview.
